First Place Transition Academy clinically operated by SARRC

First Place Transition Academy - Adults with autism are learning their way to independence
For 10 impactful years, the First Place Transition Academy has been guiding adults with autism on their paths to more independent living.

Independent Living Takes Practice

The First Place Transition Academy, with clinical services provided by SARRC, is a structured two-year program at First Place–Phoenix designed to build essential skills for independent living. Through the Learn4Independence® curriculum and ABA services for adults with autism, participants develop life, social and employment skills.

Participants live in a four-bedroom suite with a private bedroom and have access to career services, including volunteer opportunities, internships and employment, along with on-site amenities and a convenient midtown location near public transportation.

Over two years, participants complete 32 Learn4Independence courses, continue transition planning and graduate with a life skills certificate from GateWay Community College.

Founded in 2012 by SARRC co-founder Denise D. Resnik, First Place AZ develops new residential models that maximize independence, community engagement, personal enrichment and quality of life by supporting individuals with autism to live more independently. First Place–Phoenix is the first such innovative residential property that leverages the benefits of a supportive urban community. Within walking distance of public transit, individuals are connected to jobs, friends, lifelong education, healthcare, recreation and culture.

Through this partnership, Transition Academy participants are enrolled at GateWay Community College in Phoenix and can pursue a non-credit certificate in Independent Living Skills and Career Development. Participants receive their certificates after completing the two-year program. This certificate is unique to the Maricopa County Community College District.
