My name is Hilary Ottaviano, and I am a Senior Clinical Supervisor at the Scottsdale Paiute Community School campus. I have been with SARRC for nearly three years and hold a master’s degree in applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) from Arizona State University. The field of ABA is particularly meaningful to me, as one of my sisters has an autism diagnosis. Through this experience, I have personally witnessed the profound impact on families, and I am dedicated to providing high-quality care to improve the lives of all those affected.
What drew you to SARRC?
The evidence-based approach seamlessly integrates young learners with typically developing peers, providing valuable socialization opportunities. Over the past three years, I have observed firsthand how model peers, within group settings, naturally support learners, creating an environment that fosters growth and development.
SARRC’s commitment to providing services across the lifespan and ensuring these services remain accessible to the community deeply resonates with me.
Furthermore, I saw the role of a Clinical Supervisor as an exceptional opportunity for professional growth and learning, enabling me to be part of something truly unique compared to my previous experiences in ABA.
Can you tell us about your job as a Senior Clinical Supervisor in the Community School? What are some of your responsibilities?
As a Senior Clinical Supervisor, I support both the Preschool 1 and Toddler classrooms at our Scottsdale Paiute campus. My responsibilities include ensuring that staff have the tools and resources they need to succeed and feel empowered in their roles, fostering a positive team atmosphere, and collaborating with families to provide support for challenges that may arise at home or in the community. Additionally, I maintain quality care through clinical case supervision and observations, parent support meetings and training, and data-driven decisions based on current behavior analytic programming.
What are the top three skills someone in your position should have or learn to be successful?
I believe perspective-taking and responding effectively to situations are essential skills for success in my role. There are often multiple solutions to a problem, and determining the best course of action frequently involves seeking feedback and ideas from others. Maintaining a growth mindset, along with a passion for improvement and continuous learning, is invaluable in our field. Additionally, strong time management skills are crucial, as we frequently need to balance and quickly adapt between clinical and administrative duties, as well as interacting with children, parents, and staff. As a bonus, I’d also add that attitude is contagious, so it’s important to remember to have fun and keep a positive outlook!
Is there an achievement or contribution you’re most proud of?
I’m proud of my role in supporting and empowering staff members in their positions. I focus on uplifting others and instilling confidence, fostering a culture where everyone has opportunities to succeed. Creating an environment where individuals feel comfortable asking questions and being vulnerable is something I truly value.
Can you share one of the most rewarding experiences you’ve encountered at SARRC?
One of the most rewarding experiences for me has been witnessing the progress our clients make, particularly in socialization. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see how our model supports children and helps them grow in a natural group setting. I also find it deeply rewarding to observe the growth of the team I serve. It’s truly gratifying when a new therapist, with no prior experience, develops strong clinical competence and advances in their career.
What is the best advice for someone who wants a job like yours?
My advice is to acknowledge that some days will be more challenging than others, but it’s important to keep moving forward and remember that tomorrow is a new day. Stay flexible, focus on solutions, and always support and listen to your team members.
